Allen Tate Realty

"Little Man Tate" is a rather serious comedy about a 7-year-old childhood prodigy named Fred Tate who is torn between his rather ordinary mother and a bright woman in charge of other prodigies. The acting is quite good, especially that of Adam Hann-Byrd, who plays the role of Fred Tate.

Dete Tate (Foster) is the single mother of Fred, a 7-year-old genius with few friends and some severe emotional problems. Fred goes to a rather ordinary school and stands out in they eyes of his teacher and classmates. Meanwhile, Jane Grierson (Wiest), head of a school for gifted children, notices Tate and wants to enroll him in her school. After some coaxing, Dede agrees to let Jane enroll him in a 3-week program, in which he travels with some other childhood prodigies.

After the program, Fred starts having some problems at home. As a result, Jane agrees to send him away to college for the summer and kept in Jane's care.

College turns out to be a disaster for Fred. Jane is unable to cope with Fred's emotional needs, and Fred is unable to fit in with the college-age kids. Although he becomes good friends with a bohemian character for a day or so, things don't work out. Finally, after the Fourth of July, Fred goes back home to be reunited with his mother. Jane realizes her mistakes with Fred and cools down toward him.

Fred ends up writing an autobiography and becoming famous for a year or so and makes several new friends.
