If anyone tells you that you can buy a star, they are either lying to you or they mean that by buying a star you're really dedicating a star to someone or something. In fact, there is no law that stops companies from "selling" the same star to multiple people.
However, the idea of buying a star does have merit. Especially when you have seen the fancy kits that come with these gifts. Besides, the idea is both novel and romantic. Very few people do it or are aware of it, so this all led me to look into the idea of buying a star.
I found over six different companies that allowed me to buy a star. Most of them would not even tell me that I actually wasn't buying the star at all, and that the scientific community wouldn't recognize it. Instead, they tried to sweep this point under the rug.
The company that was most forthcoming was Star Registry.
Star Registry told me up front the truth -- that what I am really doing is dedicating a star to someone special. Additionally, Star Registry is unlike a lot of other companies, because each year they publish a book which lists the different stars that have been dedicated, to assure the purchasers that each star that is dedicated has only been dedicated once.
When you buy a star from Star Registry, you get a pretty elaborate kit. The kit contains a 12" x 16" full-color parchment certificate, which is personalized with the name of the star you have come up with, as well as the day you dedicated the star and the coordinates in the sky.
Furthermore, you will get a chart containing the consolation and location circled in red, and an astronomy book by a professional astronomer giving you additional information. Finally, in the package there is also a letter of congratulations to the person that you are giving the gift to.
What the heck, I thought. I decided to purchase one for my girlfriend. I explained to her that I dedicated a star to her, and I gave her a kit to signify it. She thought it was romantic, and much better than the last two presents I had given her. To say the least, I was very happy with the idea that you can dedicate a star to someone else.
