One of the most famous sites in all of California is the Golden Gate Bridge. It was originated in idea by James Wilkins and was completed in 1937. It is one of the most renowned suspension bridges spanning the area from the San Francisco Bay Peninsula to Marion County. It is currently the second longest suspension bridge in the United States, behind the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York City. The bridge cost over $27 million dollars to build and has been shut down five times, due to harsh weather conditions. The latest of these occurred in 2005. On average, over 100,000 cars cross the bridge daily.
The bridge has six lanes and two walkways going north and south bound. The middle lanes switch during the week to allow for four lanes to run southbound in the mornings and then four lanes run northbound in the afternoon. It may appear to have a red cast to the Golden Gate Bridge, but in fact it is a color that is referred to as International Orange. This color was chosen by Irving Morrow, due to the high visibility while still blending with the natural surroundings. The paint is currently maintained by 38 painters who are on constant watch when it starts to erode. The Golden Gate Bridge is one that is awed by many for its intriguing two tower design and that many people visit each year, just to take pictures of it.
