The Sheyenne River Valley of North Dakota offers natural, historical,
scenic, archeological, cultural, and recreation activities for all to
enjoy.
Remnants of Native Americans who lived here many years ago can be
found throughout the valley. Also the history of early settlers, evidence
of their way of life and culture, can be found throughout the Sheyenne
River Valley.
As with the Native Americans, evidence is plentifull everywhere you look.
For example, burial grounds, log cabins, historical sites, centennial farms,
old mill dams, and historical museums can all be found in this area to learn
more about the culture and heritage of North Dakota.
For a great day out in the country, you have to take a drive on the
Sheyenne River Valley Scenic and Historical Byway. Winding through the valleys and
hills, this 63 mile scenic byway gained national recognition in
2002.
While traveling along this wonderful scenic drive, be sure to stop and
checkout the 40 interpretive panels and the 10 map panel kiosks along this
historical route.
Another great advantage to be had while traveling along the Sheyenne
River Valley Scenic Byway is the access to the North Country National
Scenic Trail. This is a non-motorized hiking trail that runs from Lake
Sakakawea to the Adirondack Mountains in New York state. When this
trail is completed it will consist of over 4200 miles of hiking
trails.
Five of these hiking trails can be found right here in North Dakota. They
can be found at Lake Ashtabula, Valley City, Fort Ransom State Park,
Sheyenne State Forest, and the Sheyenne National Grasslands.
So why not get outdoors and discover North Dakota. You will find
something for everyone. Make this an educational experience for the
whole family, and above all Have Fun!
